What does Tung Tung Tung Sahur mean?

Short version: "knock, knock, knock — breakfast before sunrise!" Long version involves a real Ramadan tradition, an Indonesian creator, a wooden log with a bat, 31 million views, a Guinness record and a copyright lawsuit. Here's the whole story, in order.

The phrase, word by word

  • Tung — onomatopoeia: the "toong" of a wooden slit drum being struck. In Indonesia, "tukang sahur" (sahur callers) have traditionally walked neighborhoods before dawn during Ramadan, beating drums or Kentongan sticks so everyone wakes to eat before the fast begins.
  • Sahur — Indonesian for suhur, the pre-dawn meal eaten before fasting starts each Ramadan day. (Curious about the real thing? We explain it respectfully in what is sahur?.)

So the full phrase imitates the drum call: tung… tung… tung… sahur! The repetition isn't random — callers knock repeatedly, and community lore adds the creepy rule of three.

The character

In late February 2025, Indonesian TikTok user @noxaasht (Fernanda Bagas Indrastata) posted an AI-generated creature: an anthropomorphic wooden log — wide staring eyes, stubby limbs, baseball bat in hand — "patrolling" at sahur time. The clip is documented at 31M+ views, with reposts beyond 42M. Search interest peaked around Ramadan (March–April 2025), declined mid-year, and revived in 2026.

Though it's grouped under the Italian brainrot label (for the naming style), the character is Indonesian in origin and is the genre's most famous import. Full character file: Tung Tung Tung Sahur, explained.

The lore (invented by fans, clearly fictional)

Fan lore says the creature appears at sahur time and follows home anyone who ignores its third knock. That horror flourish — straight out of Indonesian jump-scare culture — is exactly why the meme stuck: a wholesome tradition plus a spooky twist equals perfectly remixable comedy. None of it is part of the actual Ramadan practice, which is simply about sharing a meal before the fast.

From meme to world record

  • Oct 11, 2025: Roblox's Steal a Brainrot (built around these characters) set a Guinness World Record — 25,868,678 concurrent players.
  • Jun 2025: Skifidol brainrot trading cards hit Italian newsstands; a Panini sticker album followed.
  • Apr 2026: TTTS and Ballerina Cappuccina became Fortnite skins.
  • Ongoing: A copyright lawsuit (Mementum Lab v. Do Big Studios) over the character's use is testing whether AI-generated characters can be owned at all.

How to use the phrase (and how not to)

Saying "tung tung tung sahur" to wake a friend during Ramadan? Totally fine — it's affectionate and on-theme. Using it to mock the fasting itself or spam Muslim creators? Not fine, and widely called out when it happens. The tradition behind the sound is real to millions of people; the character is a funny layer on top of it, not a replacement for it.
